And you are going to like it!

Newsarama also has an account of the Taki Soma incident, with a statement by Brownstein included. The discussion thread is pretty much the worst thing in the world--my favorite comes from someone named "FatMaleGamer":

She wants solid legal advice?

If you feel you've been wronged, you need to press charges when you get the chance. I have every sympathy in the world for a woman who clearly says no, and nothing but disdain for a guy who tries to excuse himself by saying he was drunk, but when it comes to this sort of thing, you need to make a decision and stick with it.

As a side note, while I will never condone this sort of behavior, I firmly believe that no permanent damage was done, regardless of what an army of psychologists would say.

Awesome. Thanks, professional fanboy! Elsewhere:

As others have stated I don't condone the man's behavior, and alchohol is no excuse. It does sound however that the alchohol is the reason for this unfortunate behavior on both parties behalfs. This man clearly crossed the line. However this woman put herself in a bad situation and decided not to end things when she should have.

I'm sooo tempted to start a "who's side are you on?" thread but that's probably in bad taste. While I'm a tad dissapointed that Rama released Charles Brownstein as the alledged perp, (even when LITG wouldn't) I'm glad they did it in such a balanced manner.

Just goes to show you, don't pass judgement until you have all the facts.

Is someone going to buy Ronee Bourgeois a shiny new armored suit for the occasion?

edit: No, I have a new favorite now!

What I don't understand is why this is the sort of news that should be posted on a site like this. I go to Newsarama to read about comics, and this really has nothing to do with comics. There are other ways to drum up website hits, guys, and this is not one of them. This is a legal matter and should be left to the parties involved, and the courts, if need be. It's disgusting to see posters treating this like a "hero vs. hero" discussion. Get back to reporting on comics, not scandals, Newsarama.

Thank you and good night.

If someone is raped, and they don't object, is it wrong?

No one was raped in this case.

If you don't object to something, then you are consenting to it. Rape can't be consentual.

Hooray for roofies!

I enjoy his pathological need to disclaim. I wonder if he's not racist or anything, but y'all, black people totally scare him?

Look, I'm not saying we should throw them all in jail. All I'm saying is that if we DID...

I love the general assumption that, now that he's released a statement, we have "all the facts."

Yeah, clearly if a woman didn't want to be groped, she wouldn't have breasts. Obviously, she was asking for it. Once again, the straight white male loses out.

It's a royal bloody mess is what it is, and it's going to get worse before it ever stands a chance of getting better; it also wouldn't surprise me if this has a horribly negative effect on women working in comics.

Now it looks like this: Bourgeois was looking to play out the issues related to her rape (including but not limited tothe PTSD aspects), which doesn't eliminate good intentions on her part -- just color the effort in a bad way; Soma is looking for some kind of vengeance, and not just legal redress (considering what she did and didn't do); Brownstein was an idiot, but likely not the lecherous boozehound he was made out to be before he was outed, and has been rebuffed altogether in several attempts to apologize and make amends...but at the same time didn't come out and admit it was him, and now that his hand has been forced may not be telling the complete truth (according to her she was groped and practically stripped; according to him he was making mock actions; according to the witness he was practically paralytic -- it's fucking Rashohiomon isn't it?)

I had a brief exchange with Rich Johnston about this last night. It hasn't yet begun to get as ugly as its going to get.

It sucks, big time. I feel really sorry for Taki Soma, to be frank, because she's going to catch so much shit, and even though some of her actions have been on the clumsy side (and Bourgeois' hot-headed actions really contributed to the downside of this) she doesn't deserve what's likely to hit her.

The other side effect is that men are going to be further stigmatized as drooling lecherous bastards, but that's so common nowadays that I think we should all declare ourselves gay and get it over with. It's getting down to your choice of Men As Monsters or Men As Lameass Losers. Unfortunately we earned so much of the approbation that I wodner if there's ever been a chance of overcoming it....

Oh good, a new flavor of sad. This thing is like Misery Fudge Ripple.

Also: hee, Rashohiomon. That's just begging to be stolen. :D

Of course, it wasn't Newsarama that outed Brownstein but The Comics Journal. Rich was basically hanging fire because he knew the TCJ piece was coming.

I knew something was coming. I said as much. To be honest, based on reports coming out of Toronto, I thought Buzzscope would do it first.

And yes, there's a lot more that isn't being said by both parties, and more to come from third parties on the issue. This is the tip.

Ooops ... hit enter by accident. Very disturbing, upsetting, and unsettling with a slight hint of reality that the situation is way past your ability to control it.
