Unrequited and it feels so good...
I don't really want to talk about Lesbian Batwoman, because I'm not reading 52 and I don't care about Batman and his angsty little clique, but I do have a question regarding the hellstorm of coverage surrounding her online. It's something that's come up not-infrequently, as here, and though my geek-fu is mercifully weak, even I know it's considerably off.

Why are people all pissy that DC is "destroying" a "well-established", "well-loved," wank wank wank character? The old Batwoman (Purse Batwoman) not only died, but according to Wikipedia she got wiped out by the Crisis dealie. Hell, Purse Batwoman has black hair and extremely dubious fashion sense, even for the '50s--Lesbian Batwoman is a smokin'-hot redhead who might let you watch her take off her sexy leather batsuit (hot!). They're not the same person; they just share a name in what I imagine is an attempt to be witty. So why pretend that they are, and that DC is raping their childhood like so much Dibny?

I mean, I could forgive the media for fudging the details (because when you get right down to it, no one should know this), but these are bona fide nerds saying these things. People who have dedicated their lives to the study of pre- and post-Crisis incarnations of every last caped dork out there--people who don't need to look it up on Wikipedia, and who bought The Kingdom when it was new (thanks again, Wikipedia!), ferchrissakes! Come on, guys.

While I am briefly discussing her, I also think they should bring back Ace the Bat-Hound as a shivering, asthmatic, sequin-bedecked Chihuahua. Effeminate midget Latino crimefighters = DIVERSITY OUT EL WAZOO. Plus, kids love that Paris Hilton.

The really amusing thing is that the firestorm surrounding lesbian Batwoman has overflowed in MSNBC! They were reporting it like it was the biggest news ever.

And then the female reporter was confused, and asked if comics did heavy issue things these days. *facepalm*

Oh, don't diss Alison Stewart, even if her show is awful. :D

You gotta remember, to these non-nerd types, kids still read comics, and comics have the depth of a Superfriends episode. When in fact, socially arrested middle-aged men read comics, and the comics have the depth of a Korn video.

If you want a really good laugh, visit an Iron Man message board sometime and laugh to such thoughtful logic as, "Tony Stark is a brilliant inventor on the cutting edge of technology... Why doesn't he still use that armor he wore in the 80's?"

Re: Today I hate comic... More so than most other days, so please excuse me.
If he's a futurist, then he SHOULD be using his '80s armor, because our conception of the future at that point is way cooler than our conception of it now--see: Back to the Future Part II--and thus, that armor would be indescribably more awesome than whatever he's got now.

Deep in your heart you know I'm right.

Back in the 70s, Iron Man's armor was as lightweight and flexible as spandex, yet stronger than steel. Today, he's just a mecha. So, yeah.

As for the Batwoman thing, two words: disguised homophobia. The "raping my childhood" arguement is just a cover for "Jesus made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve".

Haven't read anyone wanking on the well-established deal so much as being incredulous at the "buxom lipstick lesbian" business which, on a scale between Frank Miller and, I don't know, Gail Simone, leans a lot more towards the "I touched my mother's breast, it bled on me" side of the scale (and the high heels aren't helping). Plus, there's the festering (and well-deserved) resentment of how DC treated Batgirl and Spoiler, so there's the unspoken assumption that DC killed or be-eviled the girls to make room for their HOT! LESBIAN! ACTION! Batwoman and fill some quotas.

I agree with a fair amount ofthat, except (as far as I can recall) the New Your Times are resonsible for the whole 'buxom lipstick lesbain' thing.
The description that is, not the homosexuality :)

Another example of media 'sexing up' a story to make it more newsworthy.

Yeah, DC isn't exactly known for treating it's female characters very nicely.

I wonder how it will look when writer X at DC decides to leave her in a ditch somewhere.

*grumble* Stephanie = best Robin ever.

If you have the time, the self-loathing, and the stomach for it, poke around on the DC boards. You'll find a sizable chunk of fanboys lamenting poor Bob Kane's legacy of plagiarism, as well as gems like this:

my problems with batwoman being gay are :
1. is lesbian or tomboy the more accurate term ?

2. does a lesbian like batwoman prefer to be referred to as he, him ?

3. does batwoman wear briefs or panties ?

4. will batwoman go to the ladies or the mens ?

5. does batwoman stand when discharging liquid waste ?

6. god forbid that batwoman will ever wear a minimizer.

7. suffering sappho, i hope no lesbian gets angry at me bec. i love lesbians.

Man I guess I haven't been reading the same sites as you -- Most of the reaction I read was positive and no one went apeshit over them changing a character. It's certainly not the same thing as when Marvel made Rawhide Kid gay (and then totally wussed out on everything), because that was making a change to an established (albeit unused) character. With Batwoman... it's just like making the new Blue Beetle hispanic. I seriously hope there aren't people on message boards complaining that Ted Kord is a mexican now.

Well, the Rawhide Kid kerfluffle was perfectly acceptable, because that was AWFUL.

I mean, Christ, you could almost hear the lisp.

I'm not really considering her a pre-existing character since, but I can see how some may. She is the next character with that name so is she therefore the new version. And if she is a new version, then she is, in some way, the original character.

I guess it's like if they erased Ted Kord from continuity after Infinite Crisis and created a new Ted Kord whom was still Blue Beetle although a completely different character with red hair who was also gay.

Booster: "I'm not seeing a difference. Is it the hair?"

The reason for my apathy towards the character is because new Batwoman sounds like a cheap marketing ploy. Of course, maybe it shouldn't even be a topic of discussion. Since it is, the ploy worked. Part of me is saying kudos to DC for making being a hero less of a hetero monopoly. However, Marvel beat them to it.

I suppose I would not have been satisfied unless it was Barbara Gordon in the Batsuit. Actually, I wouldn't have been satisfied unless she walked again. If she could walk, I wouldn't feel that Batwoman was a big middle finger to Babs.
[info]heykidzcomix wrote:

Do we know for sure that Babs can't walk yet? I know that she did get back some motion in her toes, and it has been a year; just because she's still in her wheelchair doesn't mean she can't walk or stand for very brief instances. Intense PT like she would need would take a long time to work, after all.

I can literally see in my mind the kind of chihuahua you mean.

The thing I find funny about the talk about Lesbian Batwoman is all the "She's gay! But it's not like that's the only reason she exists. She's a complex character. Who is gay. But she's not complex because she is gay. Because that's totally not a big deal. But she is gay. In case you forgot." business.
I mean, either it's the basis for the character or it's not, in which case why do they feel the need to mention it first and foremost in their press releases? Personally, I think her lesbian-hood is the basis for the character, since DC keeps going on about how she's an example of "diversity" and using her to stir up the strange kind of "not even a big deal! Why, are you offended? Aren't we "with it"?" mini-scandal these things are always intended to stir up so more people will read the comics. It would be great if superheroes who were 'coincidentally' members of "hot-button" groups didn't feel so much like stunts all the time, but the sad thing is that they really do, despite all the fluffy talk about diversity.

Yes. Exactly. This Batwoman is a lesbian, and that's the MOST IMPORTANT PART of her character. That's all she is: a LESBIAN!

She wouldn't bother me at all if they were advertising her as a "member of high society who fights crime under the Bat-mantle and happens to be homosexual", it's that she is "the GAY Batwoman! She likes WOMEN! Not men! She likes to hug, kiss, pet and have sex with WOMEN! Because she's a LESBIAN! YAAAAAAAAAAAY! she also has other personality traits, but we honestly couldn't tell you what they were if you pumped us full of truth serum."

Well, they felt a need to mention it because the New York Times wanted to know about diversity in their lineup. They wanted to list all the not-white not-hetero not-Christian characters.

They had Bluee Beetle and Batwoman.
