I don't really want to talk about Lesbian Batwoman, because I'm not reading 52 and I don't care about Batman and his angsty little clique, but I do have a question regarding the hellstorm of coverage surrounding her online. It's something that's come up not-infrequently, as here, and though my geek-fu is mercifully weak, even I know it's considerably off.
Why are people all pissy that DC is "destroying" a "well-established", "well-loved," wank wank wank character? The old Batwoman (Purse Batwoman) not only died, but according to Wikipedia she got wiped out by the Crisis dealie. Hell, Purse Batwoman has black hair and extremely dubious fashion sense, even for the '50s--Lesbian Batwoman is a smokin'-hot redhead who might let you watch her take off her sexy leather batsuit (hot!). They're not the same person; they just share a name in what I imagine is an attempt to be witty. So why pretend that they are, and that DC is raping their childhoodlike so much Dibny?
I mean, I could forgive the media for fudging the details (because when you get right down to it, no one should know this), but these are bona fide nerds saying these things. People who have dedicated their lives to the study of pre- and post-Crisis incarnations of every last caped dork out there--people who don't need to look it up on Wikipedia, and who bought The Kingdom when it was new (thanks again, Wikipedia!), ferchrissakes! Come on, guys.
While I am briefly discussing her, I also think they should bring back Ace the Bat-Hound as a shivering, asthmatic, sequin-bedecked Chihuahua. Effeminate midget Latino crimefighters = DIVERSITY OUT EL WAZOO. Plus, kids love that Paris Hilton.

And then the female reporter was confused, and asked if comics did heavy issue things these days. *facepalm*
You gotta remember, to these non-nerd types, kids still read comics, and comics have the depth of a Superfriends episode. When in fact, socially arrested middle-aged men read comics, and the comics have the depth of a Korn video.
If you want a really good laugh, visit an Iron Man message board sometime and laugh to such thoughtful logic as, "Tony Stark is a brilliant inventor on the cutting edge of technology... Why doesn't he still use that armor he wore in the 80's?"
Deep in your heart you know I'm right.
As for the Batwoman thing, two words: disguised homophobia. The "raping my childhood" arguement is just a cover for "Jesus made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve".
The description that is, not the homosexuality :)
Another example of media 'sexing up' a story to make it more newsworthy.
I wonder how it will look when writer X at DC decides to leave her in a ditch somewhere.
*grumble* Stephanie = best Robin ever.
of plagiarism, as well as gems like this:my problems with batwoman being gay are :
1. is lesbian or tomboy the more accurate term ?
2. does a lesbian like batwoman prefer to be referred to as he, him ?
3. does batwoman wear briefs or panties ?
4. will batwoman go to the ladies or the mens ?
5. does batwoman stand when discharging liquid waste ?
6. god forbid that batwoman will ever wear a minimizer.
7. suffering sappho, i hope no lesbian gets angry at me bec. i love lesbians.
LOLZ DYEKS M I RITE?
I mean, Christ, you could almost hear the lisp.
I guess it's like if they erased Ted Kord from continuity after Infinite Crisis and created a new Ted Kord whom was still Blue Beetle although a completely different character with red hair who was also gay.
Booster: "I'm not seeing a difference. Is it the hair?"
The reason for my apathy towards the character is because new Batwoman sounds like a cheap marketing ploy. Of course, maybe it shouldn't even be a topic of discussion. Since it is, the ploy worked. Part of me is saying kudos to DC for making being a hero less of a hetero monopoly. However, Marvel beat them to it.
I suppose I would not have been satisfied unless it was Barbara Gordon in the Batsuit. Actually, I wouldn't have been satisfied unless she walked again. If she could walk, I wouldn't feel that Batwoman was a big middle finger to Babs.
The thing I find funny about the talk about Lesbian Batwoman is all the "She's gay! But it's not like that's the only reason she exists. She's a complex character. Who is gay. But she's not complex because she is gay. Because that's totally not a big deal. But she is gay. In case you forgot." business.
I mean, either it's the basis for the character or it's not, in which case why do they feel the need to mention it first and foremost in their press releases? Personally, I think her lesbian-hood is the basis for the character, since DC keeps going on about how she's an example of "diversity" and using her to stir up the strange kind of "not even a big deal! Why, are you offended? Aren't we "with it"?" mini-scandal these things are always intended to stir up so more people will read the comics. It would be great if superheroes who were 'coincidentally' members of "hot-button" groups didn't feel so much like stunts all the time, but the sad thing is that they really do, despite all the fluffy talk about diversity.
She wouldn't bother me at all if they were advertising her as a "member of high society who fights crime under the Bat-mantle and happens to be homosexual", it's that she is "the GAY Batwoman! She likes WOMEN! Not men! She likes to hug, kiss, pet and have sex with WOMEN! Because she's a LESBIAN! YAAAAAAAAAAAY! she also has other personality traits, but we honestly couldn't tell you what they were if you pumped us full of truth serum."
HELLZ YEAH, BITCHEZ.
They had Bluee Beetle and Batwoman.
WON'T YOU?
